The Best Gout Supplements

Gout requires you to make changes to your lifestyle and diet. If you don’t the chances are high that you will get recurring gout attacks with swollen joints, shooting pain and just general agony. One of the best things you can do is begin to make changes in your diet to cut down on:

  • Processed Foods
  • Offal
  • Shellfish
  • Mushrooms & Beans
  • Junk & Fast Food
  • Salty Food
  • Alcohol (Especially Beer)

This list is not exhaustive but will get you moving in the right direction. In addition to cutting back on these foods, using gout supplements can be very effective in your battle to stay pain free.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the best gout supplements for boosting your immune system. It also plays a key role in liver and kidney function. Since your liver and kidneys are essentially the garbage disposal organs of your body, keeping them running at optimum levels can help in the removal of uric acid from the body. There are many ways to get vitamin C from your diet by incorporating citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons or drinking orange juice.

However, fruit juices also contain a lot of sugar and this can cause problems for gout sufferers. Sugar can actually trigger a gout attack for some people. I find it easier to take vitamin C tablets to help avoid any potential problems caused by excess sugar.


turmericTurmeric is a spice used in cooking, but also a staple of Indian and oriental medicine. It has been used for centuries to treat joint pain and inflammation. It does this due to the active compound curcumin. For curcumin to be effective your body needs to build up levels of it. Therefore this is best taken on a daily basis rather than during a gout attack. Turmeric itself is very bitter and turmeric tablets are far easier and more pleasant to take rather than trying to drink down a mix of powder and water.

Milk Thistle

I learned about milk thistle years ago and have been using it ever since. Milk thistle is a great supplement for gout as it improves liver function. Most people that have gout have rather sluggish livers due to poor diet or lack of exercise. As a result your body’s ability to process uric acid effectively is compromised. Milk thistle capsules are a good way to improve your liver function.

Celery Seed Extract

Another of the great gout supplements is celery seed extract. Celery seed extract has been reported by many gout sufferers to help lower pain and inflammation. A study done on rats found that celery seed extract helped lower uric acid and improve liver function. Celery seed is readily available at most health stores or on 

Electrolyte Powders

Electrolyte powders are other great supplements for gout. Gout is caused in many cases by dehydration coupled with high uric acid levels. By using electrolyte powders such as Emergen-C you help to rehydrate your body quickly. This is especially useful in the summer or after doing exercise.
